'Beyond the Gender Binary: Navigating the Gender Spectrum'
Sekhmet Institute, in collaboration with Kolektivi Zinë and Edi Shefkiu, has published the zine Beyond the Gender Binary: Navigating the Gender Spectrum, accompanied by an exhibition of Edi Shefkiu’s illustrations. This collaborative event took place in the self-publishing workshop space at The Centre for Narrative Practice.
Beyond serving as the site where these new works were created, the space itself became a place of hope and opportunity, fostering further knowledge production through self-publishing initiatives. The Riso printer, colors, papers, pencils, and pens remained in their usual spots, just as they would on any other day.
As part of the intervention, six new commissions by Edi Shefkiu were exhibited alongside various layers and sketches produced through the printer. Copies of the newly published zine, along with past issues by Kolektivi Zinë, were available on the shelves. The exhibition was on display for a week at The Centre for Narrative Practice during December 2023.
At Sekhmet, we see art as a powerful tool for occupying public space with honesty and solidarity. It allows us to question the 'given' and the 'normal,' making space for emerging talent and uninhibited self-expression. We were proud to support the extraordinary artist Edi Shefkiu in collaboration with Kolektivi Zinë and The Centre for Narrative Practice — platforms that, like us, champion grassroots efforts to challenge the status quo.
